Newbie Skateboarding Blues - What Causes Them
Skateboarding is a lot of fun. If you've been paying attention you've no doubt noticed that skateboarding has gone from an odd past time for teenagers to a fully recognized sport for grown adults! Some people even make a living with skateboarding (think Tony Hawk)! But it's really cool because just about anyone can learn skateboarding. The bad news is that it can take quite a while before you are skateboarding at the same level as the pros. It takes dedication and hard work but if you want to do it, here are some tips to help you get started.
It takes time to figure out which foot goes in front and which foot goes in back. It really does not matter which hand you are, left or right. You'll have to know which of your legs is the dominant leg. How do you approach things? Which foot do you naturally use when you kick a ball? With which foot do you usually start walking up a staircase? If you stumble, which foot do you automatically use to catch yourself with? Your answer to those questions is your dominant leg, and it usually stays toward the rear of the board. How you stand has less to do with which way you want to face as you move on the board and more to do with which leg is stronger and sturdier.
It's probably best to find a well-built board that's not priced too high. Really good and really fancy skateboards are incredibly expensive. They cost so much you might be afraid to get them dirty or scuffed. This is why you need to start with a beginner's board. They're usually thicker and have stronger wheels. They aren't fancy but they are durable and will be able to stand up to the beating that beginning skateboarders usually give them. Abec boards are the best to learn on because they offer the most support to newbies.
Regular and Goofy are the two skateboarding basic stances you need. The Regular stance is done with the left foot in front, right foot in the rear. In Goofy the opposite is true. For push-offs, there are four basic types. Regular: Use your right foot to push, Mongo Regular: Push with your front (right) foot, Goofy: Use your left foot, and Mongo Goofy: Push with your front (left) foot. Just keep skating and in time you'll find which one you like best.
The basics can seem hard, but only if you don't put the practice into them. No person ever became a pro fast. Have some patience and practice, then you'll really know how to control your board. If you fail to do that - the board controls you, and you could get hurt.
