How To Prevent Getting Injuries When Involved In Sports
Engaging in sports improve both your cardiovascular and immune systems. It also helps you develop discipline and self-confidence. There are many other benefits one can get from playing a sport. But alongside it, you're also at risk of getting injured. Fret not. You can minimize the risk of sustaining one by knowing effective means of preventing an injury.
First let us begin with protective equipment. Your head is very vulnerable to injuries, especially when playing certain sports. When necessary, invest in high-quality head protection equipment. Also, make sure what you're buying is specifically designed for your choice of sport. A football helmet is definitely different from a ski helmet.
Never trade function for looks. Of course that flashy black helmet may look great on you, but will it protect you from head injuries? If you're engaged in different sports, buying a protective head gear for each one of them sure sounds expensive. If you wish to economize, go for multipurpose helmets.
There are sports which also require different protective gears to be worn on certain body parts. To name a few: eye goggles, mouth guards, and pads for the elbows and knees. For men, protective cups are essential. They're ideal for sports like baseball, football and wrestling.
Aside from wearing protective gears, you should take time to do some warm ups. It's wrong to just get into the court or field and start playing. Warming up prepares your muscles for a vigorous activity. It lengthens the muscles and increases the temperature by directing blood flow towards them.
Warming up helps minimize your risk for getting injured. So how do you properly warm up? Jog for 5 to 10 minutes to increase body temperature. Follow it with 10 to 15 minutes of stretching exercises. Then another 10 to 15 minutes of doing drills for the specific sport you are playing. Don a digital sport watch to see if you've warmed up for 20 to 30 minutes.
But when you do get an injury, make sure it has completely healed before you get back to playing sports. It's not advisable to resume playing when an injury still hurts, as it's not fully recovered. If you re-injure the same part, you just might end up with a bigger problem. That's why it's important to recover completely and follow your physician's orders.
Of course the risk of getting injured is present in most sports, particularly contact ones. But by following some safety measures, you are bringing down that risk significantly.
