Double Glazed Doors - Pre-Buy Considerations

Purchasing a new glass door leaves you with many options of design and style, but also whether or not you should invest in a double glazed door. While there are several benefits to this design, the true value of a double glazed door will depend on where you live and how beneficial the door is to your climate.

What is Double Glazed? - If you’re not entirely sure what double glazed glass is to begin with, it’s a door or window that has two panes of glass instead of one, mainly to help seal in a layer of gas in between the panes. The gas will help to regulate the temperature, keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Also, double glazed glass comes with a thin metallic layer (virtually invisible) that regulates how much sunlight is reflected away from the glass.

Benefits of Double Glazed Doors - As noted, a double glazed door has superior insulation capabilities as it can regulate the indoor temperatures quite well. Another benefit is the UV protection, however this is where the double glazed glass can be more of a curse than a benefit if you don’t know how to shop. These doors can come in varying degrees of UV protection which need to be adjusted to suit your climate. For example, warm climates would benefit from high-UV protection that will deflect a large amount of sun away in order to keep your cooling bill down, however climates that have cold winters will suffer from this as the warmth of the sun will be reflected. Instead, choose a double glazed door with a low amount of UV protection. As long as you know what kind of protection you’re purchasing with your door, you can select one that suits your environment well.

While the ability to reduce your energy bill is most likely the best benefit of double glazed doors, there are other notable pluses to mention. If you select a door that has metal decorations and accents, you can probably guess how difficult these would be to clean. However, double glazed doors will place these accents between the glass panes, thus completely eliminating any need to clean them. Additionally, double glazed doors will insulate you from outdoor noise much better than a single-pane door. If you live in an urban area, you’ll find the inside of your home to be much quieter if you double glaze your windows and doors.

While double glazed doors are a bit pricier than the less elaborate single-pane, you’ll find that the long-term benefits will easily pay off once you look at your energy bill.

Is there a way to find out if I have a Double Layer DVD Burner?

I doesn't say anything about double layer on the dvd drive so can I scan my computer and see if I have a DL dvd burner?

Dual Layer DVD burners usually have the small marking "DVD+R DL" under the larger "RW" marking on front face of DVD tray. I have those markings on my two burners and I've used them for burning on dual layer DVDs.

If no such marking, drive may not be a dual layer burner. But you can still try checking the specs. Get your drive's model in Device Manager then google its specs.
